Hosting a National Safe Sedation (NSS) course:

  • this course is suitable for any healthcare professional (ideally, non-anaesthetists) who delivers conscious sedation in their sphere of practice

  • it involves very little work for the hosts

  • it has three stages

    • mandatory pre-course e-Learning (Stage 1)

    • face-to-face teaching day (Stage 2)

    • acquisition of airway skills (Stage 3)

  • registration is via the NSS website (https://nationalsafesedation.com)

  • registration fee is £300 for doctors of all grades, all other healthcare professionals (HCPs) £75 (£150 for HCPs working in the independent sector)

  • e-Learning is entirely via the NSS website

  • the face-to-face teaching day is generic (see attached programme)

  • all teaching content and presentations are provided for the faculty

  • ideally, the host hospital need to provide a faculty of three senior anaesthetists, of whom at least one must be a consultant

  • the faculty must complete the e-learning (obviously at no charge!) to maintain consistency in teaching

  • hosts need to provide minimal equipment for workshops and simulation

  • the course does not require access to a simulation suite

  • the course works best with a group of about 20 attendees

  • ideally only 10 attendees should be from the host hospital so that acquisition of basic airway skills is achievable

  • the other attendees acquire their airway skills at their base hospitals

  • anaesthetists (ideally consultants) involved with teaching airway skills are asked that wherever possible they teach as detailed to maintain consistency with e-Learning content

  • an accredited NSS Course Leader will also attend the course
